Preparing for a Technical Disaster...

$AVE!
Tired of unpredictable computer support costs?

Disaster recovery is a lot like life insurance. You hope you never have to use it, but if you do, you and everyone involved will be grateful that you had planned for it. This is my topic for the month of December. With all the budgets set for 2010, you may want to consider virtualizing your servers if you plan on replacing them. This is one area of disaster recovery, when applicable, is a must. What's this mean? Under a virtualized environment, you would be able to recover from hardware failures in a very short period of time. You no longer need to wait for your hardware vendor to trouble shoot the problem and wait for the appropriate parts to come in before you are up and running. When considering the fact that even under the best scenario of waiting 4 – 8 hours to get the hardware, optimistic I know, then ultimately having to reload the operating system and applications you can expect to be down a minimum of 24 hours. Realistically 48 to 72 hours. Under virtualization, you can mount the virtual image and be up and running in less than hour. Realistically 4 hours by the time all the troubleshooting efforts have been made. So if you are considering replacing your old hardware or simply want to implement a stronger disaster recovery, consider VIRTUALIZING.

Sometimes the Medium Can Be the Message

Kaspersky Lab leads the industry in virus detection rates, antivirus and antispyware update frequency, and virus outbreak response time.An article in a recent issue of Business Week highlighted security issues with software produced by Adobe – especially Adobe Reader which is widely used in small and large organizations. The article quotes Kaspersky researcher Roel Schouwenberg saying "Adobe at the moment, is the main target." And the article goes on to suggest that "Adobe" (presumably meaning Acrobat Reader) has replaced 'Microsoft" (presumably meaning Windows) as the primary attack vector for hackers.

Attacks on vulnerabilities in application software rather than in the underlying operating system are hardly new. Anyone in the information security world can probably reel off a list of similar cases without too much difficulty. And all information security awareness training should remind students that applications must be kept up-to-date just as much as the operating system and antivirus software. Read more...

Why Kaspersky?

Three Reasons for Online Backups

· In-house backup plans can sometimes overlook the obvious need for security. Many do not see the need to secure the backup data when the data is kept inside their own walls. There are statistics that speak for the need to do so. Employees often perpetrate damage, destruction and loss. Curiosity or revenge can push people to enter an arena they normally would not go into. Data can draw this type of response. Protecting and securing your data has a lot to do with protecting your employees.

· When one employee has committed a crime, everyone is subject to questioning. It does not make sense to leave the door open and having online remote backups can close that door.

· Online remote backup sends your data encrypted with a key only you hold. The backup process cannot be initiated except through authentication. You will know who requested the backup because you have identified and authorized certain people to do so and a log will tell you who performed the backup. In addition, once the data has arrived to the remote location, you should have the added security any online remote backup service would provide along with trained staff and a 24/7 Customer Service policy. Can you say the same for the backup data located in your office?
